About the Scobina Stingray
The Scobina Stingray (Potamotrygon scobina) is a lesser-known but fascinating freshwater stingray native to the Tocantins River basin in Brazil. It is distinguished by its unique dermal denticles, which give its skin a rough, sandpaper-like texture – a feature reflected in its scientific name "scobina" (meaning rasp or file).
Appearance
Scobina stingrays have a round to oval disc with a base color ranging from light brown to dark olive. The disc is covered with numerous small, bright spots, often with a ringed or ocellated pattern. The most distinctive feature is the rough texture of the skin.
Tank Requirements
A minimum tank size of 250 gallons is recommended for a single adult Scobina. Soft, sandy substrate is essential. Water parameters: temperature 78-86°F, pH 6.0-7.5.
Diet
Scobina stingrays are carnivores: earthworms, blackworms, shrimp, sinking carnivore pellets, and chopped seafood.
