About the Bluespotted Stingray
The Bluespotted Stingray (Neotrygon kuhlii), also known as Kuhl's stingray, is a beautiful marine ray found throughout the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea to southern Japan and Australia. It is distinguished by its smooth, oval disc covered in brilliant blue spots on a brown or olive background. This species is highly sought after for marine aquariums due to its striking appearance and manageable size.
Appearance
This ray has an oval disc with a rounded snout. The dorsal surface is covered with numerous bright blue spots that can vary in size and density. The tail is moderately long and has one or two venomous spines. Some individuals may have a blue stripe along the tail. The ventral side is white. Adults typically reach a disc width of 12-15 inches.
Size & Growth
Bluespotted Stingrays reach a maximum disc width of about 15 inches. They are active and require a spacious marine aquarium. With proper care, they can live 10-15 years.
Tank Requirements
A minimum tank size of 180 gallons is recommended for a single adult, with larger tanks preferred. The tank should have a deep sand bed (at least 2-3 inches) of fine, soft sand to allow burying. Live rock should be arranged securely to create caves without sharp edges. Excellent filtration and protein skimming are essential. Water parameters: temperature 74-82°F, salinity 1.020-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4. They are sensitive to poor water quality.
Diet
Bluespotted Stingrays are carnivores and need a meaty diet: live or frozen shrimp, squid, clams, mussels, small fish, high-quality marine sinking pellets or frozen preparations. Feed 2-3 times a week. Variety is essential for health.
Compatibility
These rays are generally peaceful but will eat small fish and invertebrates. Suitable tank mates include larger, peaceful fish such as tangs, angelfish, and rabbitfish. Avoid aggressive fish and fin-nippers. They can be kept singly or in groups in very large tanks.
Bluespotted Stingray vs. Bluespotted Ribbontail
The Bluespotted Stingray (Neotrygon kuhlii) has a smoother disc and a more oval shape, while the Bluespotted Ribbontail (Taeniura lymma) has a more rounded disc and a distinctive blue stripe on the tail. Both are stunning, but the Ribbontail tends to have brighter, more vivid blue spots.
