About the Bluespotted Ribbontail Ray
The Bluespotted Ribbontail Ray (Taeniura lymma) is one of the most stunning and recognizable marine stingrays. Found throughout the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea to Australia, this species is renowned for its vibrant electric blue spots on an olive-green to yellowish-brown disc. It is a favorite among advanced marine aquarists for its beauty and active behavior, though it requires specialized care.
Appearance
This ray has an oval disc with a rounded snout. The dorsal surface is covered with numerous bright blue spots that vary in size, set against a background of olive, brown, or yellowish-green. The tail is relatively long and has two venomous spines, with a distinctive blue stripe running along each side. The ventral side is white. Adults typically reach a disc width of 12-14 inches.
Size & Growth
Bluespotted Ribbontail Rays reach a maximum disc width of about 14 inches. They are moderately active and require a spacious marine aquarium. With proper care, they can live 10-15 years.
Tank Requirements
A minimum tank size of 180 gallons is recommended for a single adult, with larger tanks preferred. The tank should have a deep sand bed (at least 2-3 inches) of fine, soft sand to allow burying. Live rock should be arranged to create caves and overhangs without sharp edges. Excellent filtration and protein skimming are essential. Water parameters: temperature 74-82°F, salinity 1.020-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, alkalinity 8-12 dKH. They are sensitive to poor water quality, so pristine conditions are a must.
Diet
Bluespotted Ribbontail Rays are carnivores and need a meaty diet: live or frozen shrimp, squid, clams, mussels, small fish, high-quality marine sinking pellets or frozen preparations. Feed 2-3 times a week for adults, more often for juveniles. Variety is key for health.
Compatibility
These rays are generally peaceful but will eat small fish and invertebrates. Suitable tank mates include larger, peaceful fish such as tangs, angelfish, and triggerfish (with caution). Avoid aggressive fish and fin-nippers. They can be kept with other rays if the tank is very large, but careful observation is needed.
