About the Hystrix Stingray
The Hystrix Stingray (Potamotrygon hystrix) is a fascinating and less common species native to the Paraná-Paraguay River basin in South America. Its name, derived from the Greek word for porcupine, refers to the numerous small, sharp dermal denticles that cover its disc, giving it a rough, spiny texture. This unique feature, combined with its attractive pattern, makes it a sought-after species for advanced stingray enthusiasts.
Appearance
Hystrix stingrays have a round to oval disc with a base color ranging from light brown to dark olive. The disc is covered with numerous small, irregular spots and vermiculations. The most distinctive feature is the presence of small, sharp dermal denticles (tubercles) scattered across the disc, giving it a rough, sandpaper-like texture.
Tank Requirements
A minimum tank size of 250 gallons is recommended for a single adult Hystrix. Soft, sandy substrate is essential. Water parameters: temperature 78-86°F, pH 6.0-7.5. Regular water changes (30-50% weekly) are crucial.
Diet
Hystrix stingrays are carnivores: earthworms, blackworms, shrimp, sinking carnivore pellets, and chopped seafood. Variety is key for health.
