About the Antenna Ray (Jabuti)

The Antenna Ray, also known as Jabuti Ray, is one of the most unique and sought-after freshwater stingrays in the hobby. Named for its distinctive elongated, pointed snout that resembles an antenna, this species is a true conversation piece. Native to the Xingu and Tocantins river basins in Brazil, the Antenna Ray is prized by advanced collectors for its unusual appearance and rarity in the aquarium trade.

Appearance

The Antenna Ray has a distinctively elongated, triangular snout that sets it apart from all other freshwater stingrays. The disc is round to oval with a base color ranging from light brown to dark gray. The disc is covered with numerous small, bright white or cream spots, often with a ringed pattern. The spots can be densely packed or more scattered. The ventral side is white. They have a moderately long tail with one or more venomous spines.

Size & Growth

Antenna Rays can reach a disc diameter of 16-20 inches. They are slower growers compared to other stingrays. With proper care, they can live 15-20 years.

Tank Requirements

A minimum tank size of 250 gallons is recommended for a single adult Antenna Ray. The tank should be wide and long (at least 6' x 2.5') to provide ample floor space. Soft, sandy substrate is essential. Strong filtration and high water flow are necessary. Water parameters: temperature 78-84°F, pH 6.0-7.2, soft to moderately hard water.

Diet

Antenna Rays are carnivores and need a protein-rich diet:

  • Live or frozen foods: earthworms, blackworms, bloodworms, shrimp, small fish
  • High-quality sinking carnivore pellets
  • Chopped seafood like squid, mussels, and fish fillets

Compatibility

Antenna Rays are generally peaceful but will eat small fish. Suitable tank mates include arowanas, large catfish, larger cichlids, and other stingrays if the tank is large enough. Avoid aggressive fish and fin-nippers.
