About the Polka Dot Pearl Stingray

The Polka Dot Pearl is a stunning variant of the Pearl Stingray (Potamotrygon henlei) that has been selectively bred for a distinct pattern of numerous, evenly spaced bright spots that resemble polka dots. This pattern is highly prized by collectors for its clean, uniform appearance and striking contrast against the dark base. Each Polka Dot Pearl is unique, but the goal of selective breeding is to achieve a consistent, dot-filled pattern.

Appearance

Polka Dot Pearls have a round, flat disc with a base color ranging from dark brown to deep black. The defining feature is the pattern of bright white or cream spots that are relatively uniform in size and evenly distributed across the disc, creating a "polka dot" effect. The spots are typically round and well-defined. The ventral side is usually white. They have a moderately long tail with one or more venomous spines. The pattern often extends onto the base of the tail.

Size & Growth

Like standard Pearls, Polka Dot Pearls can reach a disc diameter of 20-24 inches, with females larger. They are active growers and require a spacious aquarium. With proper care, they can live 15-20 years.

Tank Requirements

A minimum tank size of 300 gallons is recommended for a single adult. The tank should be wide and long (at least 8' x 3') to provide ample floor space. Soft, sandy substrate is essential. Strong filtration and high water flow are necessary due to their high waste production. Regular water changes (30-50% weekly) are crucial. Diet

Polka Dot Pearls are carnivores and need a protein-rich diet: live or frozen earthworms, blackworms, bloodworms, shrimp, small fish, high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, and chopped seafood like squid, mussels, and fish fillets. Variety is key for health and maintaining their vibrant spots.

Compatibility

These rays are generally peaceful but will eat small fish. Suitable tank mates include arowanas, large catfish, larger cichlids, and other stingrays if the tank is large enough. Avoid aggressive fish and fin-nippers.
