About the P14 Stingray

The P14 Stingray is a premier designer hybrid created by crossing a Motoro (Potamotrygon motoro) with a Leopoldi (Potamotrygon leopoldi). Appearance

P14 Stingrays typically have a round, flat disc with a base color ranging from dark brown to deep black. The patterns can vary significantly – some individuals display large, defined spots with a reticulated background, while others exhibit a more complex web-like pattern with spots scattered throughout. The spots are often bright white or golden, creating a stunning contrast. The ventral side is usually white. They have the characteristic long, whip-like tail with a venomous spine.

Size & Growth

P14 hybrids can reach a disc diameter of 20-24 inches. They are active growers and require a spacious aquarium. With proper care, they can live 15-20 years.

Tank Requirements

A minimum tank size of 300 gallons is recommended for a single adult P14. The tank should be wide and long (at least 8' x 3') to provide ample floor space. Soft, sandy substrate is essential to protect their undersides. Strong filtration and high water flow are necessary due to their high waste production. Regular water changes (30-50% weekly) are crucial. Water parameters: temperature 78-86°F, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard water.

Diet

P14 Stingrays are carnivores and need a protein-rich diet: live or frozen earthworms, blackworms, bloodworms, shrimp, small fish, high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, and chopped seafood like squid, mussels, and fish fillets. Variety is key for health and pattern development.

Compatibility

P14s are generally peaceful but will eat any fish that fits in their mouth. Suitable tank mates include arowanas, large catfish (e.g., Plecos, Tigrinus), and larger cichlids. Avoid small fish, aggressive fish, and fin-nippers. They can be kept with other stingrays if the tank is large enough and there is plenty of space.

P14 vs. P13 and Other Hybrids

P14 is a cross between Motoro and Leopoldi, while P13 is a cross between Pearl (henlei) and Motoro. P14s often have more pronounced reticulations and may show more of the Leopoldi's high-contrast spots, whereas P13s tend to have larger, pearl-like spots.
