The P13 Stingray is a highly sought-after designer hybrid, resulting from crossing a Pearl Stingray (Potamotrygon henlei) with a Motoro Stingray (Potamotrygon motoro). This combination produces offspring with unique and often spectacular patterns, combining the large, defined spots of the Pearl with the intricate reticulations of the Motoro. The "P13" designation is used by breeders to denote this specific first-generation hybrid.

Appearance

P13 Stingrays typically have a round, flat disc with a base color ranging from light brown to dark gray or black. The pattern is highly variable – some individuals display large, pearl-like spots with a hint of reticulation, while others exhibit a more complex web-like pattern. The spots can be white, cream, or golden, and often have a distinctive "halo" effect. The ventral side is usually white. They have the characteristic long, whip-like tail with a venomous spine.

Size & Growth

P13 hybrids can reach a disc diameter of 20-24 inches. They are active growers and require a spacious aquarium. With proper care, they can live 15-20 years.

Tank Requirements

A minimum tank size of 300 gallons is recommended for a single adult P13. The tank should be wide and long (at least 8' x 3') to provide ample floor space. Soft, sandy substrate is essential to protect their undersides. Strong filtration and high water flow are necessary due to their high waste production. Regular water changes (30-50% weekly) are crucial. Water parameters: temperature 78-86°F, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard water.

Diet

P13 Stingrays are carnivores and need a protein-rich diet: live or frozen earthworms, blackworms, bloodworms, shrimp, small fish, high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, and chopped seafood like squid, mussels, and fish fillets. Variety is key for health and pattern development.

Compatibility

P13s are generally peaceful but will eat any fish that fits in their mouth. Suitable tank mates include arowanas, large catfish (e.g., Plecos, Tigrinus), and larger cichlids. Avoid small fish, aggressive fish, and fin-nippers. They can be kept with other stingrays if the tank is large enough and there is plenty of space.
