About the Galaxy Stingray

The Galaxy Stingray is one of the most sought-after designer rays in the freshwater aquarium hobby. This stunning hybrid, typically a cross between Leopoldi and Motoro stingrays, is characterized by its unique pattern resembling a starry night sky – a dark base color covered in numerous small, bright white or gold spots that vary in size and density. Each Galaxy Stingray has a one-of-a-kind pattern, making it a true collector's item.

Appearance

Galaxy Stingrays have a round, flat disc with a base color ranging from dark brown to jet black. The spots are typically bright white or golden, and can be small and numerous, creating a "galaxy" effect. Some specimens may have larger spots mixed with smaller ones, adding to the visual complexity. The pattern often extends onto the fins and tail base. The ventral side is usually white. They have the characteristic long, whip-like tail with a venomous spine.

Galaxy Stingrays can reach a disc diameter of 20-24 inches. They are active growers and require a spacious aquarium. With proper care, they can live 15-20 years.

Tank Requirements

A minimum tank size of 300 gallons is recommended for a single adult Galaxy Stingray. The tank should be wide and long (at least 8' x 3') to provide ample floor space. Soft, sandy substrate is essential to protect their undersides. Strong filtration and high water flow are necessary due to their high waste production. Regular water changes (30-50% weekly) are crucial. Water parameters: temperature 78-86°F, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard water.

Diet

Galaxy Stingrays are carnivores and need a protein-rich diet: live or frozen earthworms, blackworms, bloodworms, shrimp, small fish, high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, and chopped seafood like squid, mussels, and fish fillets. Variety is key for health and maintaining their vibrant coloration.

Compatibility

Galaxy Stingrays are generally peaceful but will eat any fish that fits in their mouth. Suitable tank mates include arowanas, large catfish (e.g., Plecos, Tigrinus), and larger cichlids. Avoid small fish, aggressive fish, and fin-nippers. They can be kept with other stingrays if the tank is large enough and there is plenty of space.

Galaxy vs. Other Designer Rays

Galaxy Stingrays are often compared to P13/P14 hybrids and Black Diamonds. The key difference is the pattern: Galaxies have a "starry" look with many small spots, while P13/P14 have more defined, often larger spots or reticulations. Black Diamonds have high-contrast black and white spots, often with halos. Galaxies are prized for their unique, unpredictable patterns.
