About the Sand Goby

The Sand Goby, also known as the Ornate Goby (Oxyeleotris lineolatus), is a smaller and more intricately patterned relative of the Marble Goby. Native to freshwater and brackish habitats in Southeast Asia and Australia, this species is admired for its beautiful, detailed markings and peaceful demeanor. It makes an excellent addition to large community tanks, especially those with a soft substrate.

Appearance

Sand Gobies have an elongated body covered with a fine, intricate pattern of dark lines and spots on a light tan to brown background. The pattern resembles ornate filigree, giving the fish its common name. They have a broad head and a mouth adapted for bottom feeding. Their fins are often translucent with similar patterning. They are bottom-dwellers and will spend much of their time resting on the substrate or among rocks and driftwood.

Size & Growth

Sand Gobies are smaller than Marble Gobies, typically reaching 8-12 inches (20-30 cm) in length. They are slow growers and can live for many years in optimal conditions.

Tank Requirements

A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended for a single adult Sand Goby, with larger tanks needed for multiple fish or community setups. They prefer soft, sandy substrate to protect their undersides. Provide plenty of hiding spots using driftwood, rocks, and caves. They are not strong swimmers and appreciate gentle water flow. Water parameters: temperature 75-86°F, pH 6.5-8.0, hardness adaptable. They can be kept in freshwater, but some keepers maintain them in brackish water (specific gravity up to 1.005) for optimal health.

Diet

Sand Gobies are carnivorous and prefer meaty foods: live or frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, chopped earthworms, small shrimp, high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, and chopped seafood like squid or fish fillets. They are ambush predators and may be shy feeders initially. Target feeding is recommended, especially in community tanks.

Compatibility

Sand Gobies are peaceful toward fish too large to be eaten. However, they will consume any fish or invertebrate that fits in their mouth. Suitable tank mates include medium to large catfish, peaceful cichlids, larger barbs, and other robust species. Avoid small shrimp, very small fish, and overly aggressive tank mates. They can be kept in groups if the tank is large enough and there are plenty of hiding places.
