About the Marble Goby

The Marble Goby, scientifically known as Oxyeleotris marmorata, is often marketed as the "Saltwater Arowana" due to its elongated body and ability to thrive in brackish conditions. Native to Southeast Asia, this species is not a true arowana but a large sleeper goby. Its striking marbled pattern and hardy nature make it a popular choice for large community tanks, especially those with brackish water setups.

Appearance

Marble Gobies have a robust, elongated body covered with a beautiful marbled pattern of dark brown, black, and cream. The pattern is unique to each individual, resembling abstract art. They have a large, wide head with a mouth adapted for bottom feeding. Their fins are often patterned similarly. They are bottom-dwellers and spend most of their time resting on the substrate or hiding among decorations.

Size & Growth

Marble Gobies can grow quite large, reaching up to 24 inches (60 cm) in length in optimal conditions. They are relatively slow growers but can live for many years. A large tank is essential to accommodate their size.

Tank Requirements

A minimum tank size of 180 gallons is recommended for an adult Marble Goby. They prefer soft, sandy substrate to protect their undersides. Provide plenty of hiding spots using driftwood, caves, and PVC pipes. Water parameters: temperature 75-86°F, pH 6.5-8.0. They can be kept in freshwater, but many keepers maintain them in brackish water (specific gravity 1.005-1.010) for optimal health.

Diet

Marble Gobies are carnivorous and prefer meaty foods: live or frozen shrimp, earthworms, bloodworms, small fish, and high-quality sinking carnivore pellets.

Compatibility

Marble Gobies are generally peaceful toward fish too large to be eaten. Suitable tank mates include large catfish, arowanas, stingrays, and large cichlids. Avoid small fish that may be eaten.
