About the Leichardti Arowana

The Leichardti Arowana, commonly known as the Southern Saratoga, is one of two arowana species native to Australia (the other being the Jardini). It is found in the Fitzroy River system in Queensland. Unlike its more aggressive cousin, the Leichardti is known for its relatively peaceful temperament, making it a suitable choice for community tanks with large fish.

Appearance

Leichardti Arowanas have a more subdued coloration compared to Jardinis. They typically display a golden-bronze to olive-green body with a silvery sheen. The scales are large and may have subtle darker edges. The fins are often yellowish or olive. Juveniles may have a more pronounced pattern that fades with age. They have a streamlined body and the characteristic upturned mouth.

Size & Growth

Southern Saratogas can reach up to 24 inches in captivity. They are slower growing than Jardinis but still require large tanks. They are long-lived fish with proper care.

Tank Requirements

A minimum tank size of 250 gallons is recommended for an adult Leichardti. The tank should be long with plenty of swimming space. Provide a secure lid, as they are capable jumpers. Strong filtration and regular water changes are essential. Water parameters: temperature 75-86°F, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard water.

Diet

Leichardti Arowanas are carnivores and accept a variety of foods: high-quality sinking pellets, live or frozen shrimp, crickets, small fish, earthworms, and occasional treats like mealworms. They are less aggressive feeders than Jardinis, so ensure they get enough food in a community setting.

Compatibility

Due to their more peaceful nature, Leichardti Arowanas can be kept with a wider range of tank mates than other arowanas. Suitable companions include large catfish, plecos, peaceful cichlids, and even stingrays. They may still eat smaller fish, so choose tank mates carefully. They are generally not aggressive toward other large fish.
