About the Northern Spotted Jardini Arowana

The Northern Spotted Jardini is a regional variant of the Jardini Arowana, native to northern Australia and parts of New Guinea. It is distinguished by a more pronounced spotting pattern, with larger, pearl-like spots covering the body and fins. This variant is highly prized for its bold appearance and hardiness.

Appearance

Northern Spotted Jardinis have a silvery-bronze body with large, iridescent spots on each scale. The spots often have a golden or pearly sheen, creating a striking contrast. The fins may display hints of red or orange, especially in mature individuals. They have a robust build and the characteristic upturned mouth of arowanas.

Size & Growth

Like other Jardinis, the Northern Spotted variant can reach up to 24 inches in captivity. They are fast growers and require ample space. They are known to be more aggressive than Asian arowanas, so tank mates must be chosen carefully.

Tank Requirements

A minimum tank size of 250 gallons is recommended for a single adult. The tank should be long with plenty of swimming room. Provide a secure lid, as they are jumpers. Strong filtration and regular water changes are essential. Water parameters: temperature 75-86°F, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard water.

Diet

Jardinis are carnivores and accept a variety of foods: high-quality pellets (sinking), live or frozen shrimp, crickets, small fish, mealworms, and earthworms are a favorite. They are voracious eaters, so avoid overfeeding.

Compatibility

Northern Spotted Jardinis are territorial and can be aggressive toward other arowanas. They may also view smaller fish as prey. Suitable tank mates include large catfish, plecos, and robust cichlids (e.g., oscars). Avoid housing with peaceful or timid species. They can sometimes be kept with stingrays if the tank is large enough, but careful observation is needed.
