About the High Back Golden Arowana

The High Back Golden Arowana is a beautiful variant of the Asian Arowana, prized for its metallic gold scales that rise high on the body. Unlike the Crossback, where gold crosses over the back, the High Back's gold scales typically reach up to the 5th or 6th row, stopping before the dorsal line. It still displays impressive gold coloration and is a more accessible option for collectors seeking a quality golden arowana.

Appearance

High Back Goldens have a silvery-gold to deep gold base color. The scales are rimmed with a brighter gold, creating a net-like pattern. The gold extends high up the sides, often covering most of the body. The fins are typically lighter, sometimes with a golden sheen. As they mature, the color intensifies. Body shape is robust and elongated.

Size & Growth

Like other Asian Arowanas, High Back Goldens can reach 24-28 inches in captivity. They are long-lived with proper care.

Tank Requirements

A minimum tank size of 250 gallons is recommended for an adult. The tank should be long with a secure lid. Strong filtration and regular water changes are essential. Water parameters: temperature 78-84°F, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard water.

Diet

To enhance gold coloration, feed a varied diet: high-quality color-enhancing pellets, live or frozen shrimp, crickets, small fish, mealworms, and supplement with natural color enhancers like krill and spirulina.

Compatibility

High Back Goldens can be housed with other large, peaceful fish such as stingrays, large catfish, and cichlids. Avoid aggressive tank mates. Only one Arowana per tank is recommended unless you have a proven pair and a very large aquarium.
