About the Black Arowana

The Black Arowana is a stunning South American species native to the Rio Negro basin and other dark-water tributaries of the Amazon. It is closely related to the Silver Arowana but distinguished by its darker coloration and more elegant appearance. Juveniles are particularly striking, with a black background and bright yellow or white stripes, earning them the nickname "black arowana." As they mature, the contrast fades, but adults retain a beautiful dark gray to black sheen with iridescent highlights.

Appearance

Juvenile Black Arowanas are unmistakable: they have a jet-black body with vivid yellow or white horizontal stripes running along the body and through the fins. This pattern provides camouflage in their natural blackwater habitat. As they grow, the stripes gradually fade, and the fish develops a uniform dark gray to black coloration with metallic reflections. Adults have a sleek, elongated body with large scales and the characteristic upturned mouth of arowanas.

Size & Growth

Black Arowanas can reach up to 36 inches in the wild, but aquarium specimens typically grow to 24-30 inches. They are fast growers, especially when young, and require a large tank to accommodate their size.

Tank Requirements

A minimum tank size of 300 gallons is recommended for an adult Black Arowana. The tank should be long (at least 8 feet) with plenty of open swimming space. They are powerful jumpers, so a secure, heavy lid is essential. Strong filtration and regular water changes (20-30% weekly) are crucial. Water parameters should mimic their natural habitat: temperature 75-86°F, pH 5.5-7.0 (slightly acidic), very soft water. They are sensitive to poor water quality, so pristine conditions are a must.

Diet

Black Arowanas are carnivorous and accept a variety of foods: high-quality floating or sinking pellets, live or frozen shrimp, crickets, small fish, earthworms, and occasional treats like chopped squid or krill. They are surface feeders, so floating foods are ideal. Variety is key to health and color.

Compatibility

Black Arowanas can be kept with other large, peaceful fish such as stingrays, large catfish, and robust cichlids. They may view smaller fish as prey. They are generally not aggressive toward similarly sized fish but can be territorial. Only one arowana per tank is recommended unless you have a very large aquarium and a mated pair.
