About the Silver Arowana
The Silver Arowana is one of the most iconic and widely kept arowana species. Native to the Amazon Basin and other South American rivers, it is known for its sleek, silvery body and graceful swimming motion. It is often the first arowana for many hobbyists due to its hardiness and relatively lower price compared to Asian varieties.
Appearance
Silver Arowanas have elongated bodies covered with large, iridescent silver scales. They have a distinctly upturned mouth, adapted for surface feeding. Juveniles may have a bluish tinge, which fades to pure silver as they mature. They can grow quite large, with some individuals reaching over 40 inches in the wild, though aquarium specimens typically top out around 24-30 inches.
Size & Growth
In captivity, Silver Arowanas can reach 24-30 inches with proper care. They are fast growers, especially when young. A large tank is essential to accommodate their size and active swimming nature.
Tank Requirements
A minimum tank size of 300 gallons is recommended for an adult Silver Arowana. The tank should be long (at least 8 feet) to allow for swimming. They are known jumpers, so a secure, heavy lid is mandatory. Strong filtration and regular water changes (20-30% weekly) are crucial. Water parameters: temperature 75-86°F, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard water.
Diet
Silver Arowanas are carnivorous and thrive on a varied diet: high-quality floating or sinking pellets, live or frozen shrimp, crickets, small fish, earthworms, and occasional treats like chopped squid or krill. They are surface feeders, so floating foods are ideal. Avoid fatty meats like beef heart.
Compatibility
Silver Arowanas can be kept with other large, peaceful fish such as stingrays, large catfish, oscars, and other robust cichlids. They may view smaller fish as prey, so choose tank mates carefully. They are generally not aggressive toward similarly sized fish but can be territorial. Only one arowana per tank is recommended unless you have a very large aquarium and a mated pair.
